1988: The Same Oven
On another steamy day in the middle of the same semester, I dropped out of my first writing English course for fear of getting an F. The first three returned essays were painted with the teacher’s red pen—a discriminatory device. I got lost in the English academy; I did not know who I could turn to. Frightened, I silently announced a cold war with that writing teacher. From that moment on, every English writing course turned into an academic jail for me; writing teachers paralyzed me even before they showed up in classrooms.
I did not realize that the magic of the grammar books, TOFEL turotials that I drilled in those days had turned pale; the English grammar tests fooled me. I did not realize that the memorization trick failed me; I knew the rules yet I could not write.
1989: The Same Old Oven
A rural girl from a tiny village without electric power until when i was 14, I hated myself when I could not speak fluent English like my Bangkokian peermates who came from international high schools, who were raised abroad, and who were someone we students wanted to be.
On those summer and rainy days, I found a language laboratory to be my sanctuary;
repeating a dialogue with a tape recorder took me to another world and made me forget my realities outside the lab for awhile.
Reading the Bangkok Post newspaper was just too pricy for me to effort. A corner's bookstore thus, a semester later, became my favorite place to play hide and seek with those eyes who kept watching FREE readers (of course, like me). Here, i enjoyed my imagination, i was free from the writing teachers, and i was ME, even for a temporary moment.
That's how a girl next door like me made friends with ENGLISH, the language of others at that time, yet the language of mine now.
What's about you!

ReplyDeleteto answer your question, Joke, i'm a big fan of mountain climbing. In the picture, i was preparing my meal(like you said....5555)naturally before heading to Grand Canyon.
i used to do snockling a lot a decade ago. Diving like you do is my dream.
Yet i don't think i can as i'm very good at making stories that might haunt me while diving under the sea. so u can picture what it likes if i with the mask....jump high in the air.
Hell yeah, with my pleasure, Aj,Gob..
ReplyDeleteFirst about scuba diving, you have to believe in yourself, your mind, your physical efficiency and significant thing is your money.. but last one isn't your problem at all, haha...:P
Second, let see, where you would like to take a diving lessons, many places and islands are available, KohTao, BKK, Phuket, Krabi,....etc. I offer first one. :P
Third, here we go, I recommend you to take lessons with PADI (The Professional Association of Diving Instructors), it's better than others or you may want to decide again. There are NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors), and SSI (Scuba Schools International). In fact, there are more institutions but these three have been certified and accepted all over the world, for NAUI, i'm not sure, haha...PADI and SSI are okay!
Fourth, Hooorah, Let's go DIVING!
Hey, actually, I cannot guarantee that you might not face with somthing....horrible...:P haaha, but I can confirm that if you take lessons in Koh Tao at scuba diving school I graduated...you will be looked after very very very well. :P You will get a discount for sure!! Cost for open water lessons is 9800 B., you may have to pay only 7000-7500, have to talk first, may be lower!!:P
Nothing horrible in KohTao sea... just only some sharks and whale sharks.....kidding, they will come to KohTao once a year or twice..that's , don't worry about that,
For more comfortable, I may be there with you if I have a free time, I can be your messy buddy, haha..
Koh Tao is the best diving place in Thailand, i think you knew that!
Hey, nearly forget, only 3 days for lessons...:P
Champ, thanks for the voice! as for my memoir, i don't think there's a problem to share it with you. i'll email it to you later okay>? just remind me.. i'm hesitant to post it here as i'm concerned with third parties mentioned.
ReplyDeleteJoke, would you come to my ENG380?. You got the perfect sense of a business man. good Selling man! I'm now in!
can someone take care of my classes; i really want a 3 day mission?
Give me a break!
